Greek Polytechneio Day on November 17th
November 17th is a public holiday in Greece, which only applies to schools, universities and others in the education system. All schools are shut for the whole day and various memorial celebrations are held. Sometimes the students attend school just to watch these commemorative services and others may attend other services.
The public commemorative service is usually held at the campus of Polytechneio. It is here at the campus of Polytechneio, where people go to lay wreaths and visit the monument. On the monument are the names of all the students who died during the 1940's on the Greek Resistance. Polytechneio day was founded in 1973 after a tank was driven in to the gates of the Polytechnic, during the Greek military junta of 1967-1974.
