The island, which competed in the European Commission programme 'European Destinations of Excellence', took the award for the top sustainable tourism destination in Greece, beating eighteen other regions of the country. This year's competition was all about the best of tourism in protected areas. Criteria used to give this special award, were based on the destination which had established an economically viable tourism project whilst using a protected area as an asset.

With only days to go before the smoking ban comes into force in Greece and the Greek Islands, subtle changes are being made to lessen the impact for businesses. It seems rather unclear as to what obligations businesses will really have come the start of July and that there maybe an undetermined grace period to allow them to adapt to the new legislation. Avoiding the package zone, the Rhodes Tourist Board recommends boutique hotels and exclusive resorts for those not wishing to be part of a mass coach tour but prefer a more individual holiday.
New Acropolis Museum Opening
Holiday makers will find a new attraction to visit in the next few days, the New Acropolis Museum. The official opening of the museum in Athens is taking place on 20 June, with opening to the public from the following day.
